Introduction to Food Sensitivity Testing

Recent surveys indicate that many people are affected by food sensitivity without realising it.

Although not life threatening it can cause very unpleasant ongoing symptoms. The symptoms of food intolerances can last for days, months or years and it is often difficult to identify the problematic foods.

What is the difference between allergy and sensitivity?

A food allergy occurs when the immune system reacts, sometimes quite violently, to certain foods causing much distress to the body. Peanuts, nuts, shellfish and fish are common life long allergies. If you know you have a reaction to any food then do not eat it! The body creates certain antibodies so that the next time that food is eaten it releases many chemicals to protect the body. This would include histamine. These chemicals can then cause the body to show allergic reactions such as  vomiting,  stomach pains, rashes, swelling of the throat which can cause difficulty in breathing and possibly anaphylactic shock which in turn can lead to hospitalisation or even death. Allergy testing today is usually done through a blood test.
A food sensitivity or intolerance is an adverse reaction to food that does not involve the immune system. For instance, a person with lactose intolerance is someone who lacks an enzyme that is required to digest milk sugar so that when that person eats or drinks milk products, the reaction is possibly bloating, wind or abdominal discomfort.

It is completely non-invasive and painless. If you move to Where and When on this web site, you can see that I cover most parts of Essex where a test can be done including Southend Romford Corringham Chelmsford Colchester Rayleigh and Clacton.
